Fluor’s BHP contract, hatched to expand the South Australian copper operation

BHP Group BHP has assigned two engineering companies to expand copper smelters and refinery facilities in southern Australia, including at Olympic Dam, one of its largest copper projects, said the largest registered miners in the world on Friday.

BHP has contracted a joint venture between Australian fluorine and Pty hatch to carry out the expansion proposed in stages, with an investment of more than $ 40 million ($ 25 million) in the first stage for strategy and planning.

Phase one of the expansion will involve an increase in smelters and refineries in Olympic Dam to two stages of smelting and the extension of refinery facilities with a capacity to produce more than 500,000 tons per year, Bhp said.

The final investment decision in the first phase of the expansion of smelting and refineries is currently scheduled for the first half of the 2027 fiscal year, said Bhp.

Australian fluor is a subsidiary of the Corp Flr Fluor based in Texas, which has been involved in the design and development of several projects around the world, including expanding the BHP iron ore mines in Western Australia in 2007.

The Hatch Engineering company has also previously carried out designing work for miners to design electricity smelting factory in Australia.
