Every year, people prepare cards, flowers, gifts, and lunch to commemorate mothers in a vacation that has a rich and controversial history. Here are some surprising facts about Mother’s Day when approaching.
The first mother’s day was held on May 10, 1908 in West Virginia and Pennsylvania
The so -called “mother” from Mother’s Day is Anna Jarvis, copywriter from West Virginia. Born during a civil war, Anna witnessed when her mother Ann worked to arrange a mother’s work club to care for the army on both sides of the war, and worked to bridge the differences between mothers from north and south, according to national park services.
Jarvis began to organize for Mother’s Day as a way to respect the work of her mother and efforts to make peace. In 1907, he hosted a small group of friends to do this, announced his idea for a national vacation to respect mothers at this meeting.
In 1908, the first formal Mother’s Day celebration was observed on the second Sunday in May – Mother Jarvis’s death warnings – Di Grafton, West Virginia and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jarvis’s efforts were officially paid off in 1914. On May 8, 1914, the congress endorsed the law which declared the second Sunday May as Mother’s Day and the following day President Woodrow Wilson declared an official vacation, also declaring it as a holiday to respect mothers whose sons were killed in war. Thus, the first official Mother’s Day took place on May 10, 1914, although the holiday was widely recognized before the official declaration.
Carnations are the official flower of Mother’s Day

Consumers are expected to spend $ 33.5 billion on Mother’s Day
Eighty -four percent of US adults are expected to celebrate a vacation in 2025, and overall they are expected to spend $ 33.5 billion, including prizes, interest, cards and food, according to the National Retail Federation, which conducted an annual consumer survey.
